China urges US to respect air defence zone

Hong-LeiBeijing, Dec 5 : China Thursday urged the US to respect its establishment of the East China Sea Air Defence Identification Zone objectively and fairly.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei was responding to media reports that said US Vice President Joe Biden conveyed Washington's "deep concerns" over the air-defence zone during talks with Chinese leaders Wednesday, Xinhua reported.

Air-defence zone to improve identification: ChinaBeijing, Dec 3 : The purpose of China's Air Defence Identification Zone over the East China Sea is to improve the country's capacity to identify aircraft and avoid any misjudgement, an official said Tuesday.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei made the comments at a regular press briefing when asked to provide further explanation on the newly established zone, Xinhua reported.

China Nov 23 established the East China Sea Air Defence Identification Zone, which includes the disputed Diaoyu islands (known in Japan as Senkaku islands).

Stop boosting military power: China tells Japan

Hong-LeiBeijing, Sep 14 : China has urged Japan to stop making excuses for boosting its military capacity after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe expressed his eagerness to advance national debate on lifting a self-imposed ban on collective self-defence.

"For historical reasons, Asian neighbours are highly concerned about Japan's development in terms of politics and security. We hope Japan will follow a peaceful development path," Xinhua quoted Hong Lei, China's foreign ministry spokesman, as saying Friday.

Syrian opposition delegation begins China visit

Hong-LeiBeijing, Sep 10 : A six-member delegation of the opposition Syrian National Dialogue Forum has started its visit to China at the invitation of the Chinese People's Institute of Foreign Affairs, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei confirmed Tuesday.

During their stay, senior officials of the Chinese foreign ministry will meet and exchange views with them, Xinhua quoted Hong as saying at a daily news briefing.

"China has been engaged in mediation efforts with all parties involved in the Syrian issue in an active and balanced way, making unremitting endeavours to push for a political solution," Hong said.

China backs UN efforts on Syria

Hong-LeiBeijing, Sep 6: China supports the United Nations' efforts to resolve the Syria issue, foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said Friday.

"We hope relevant parties continue to keep in touch and deepen negotiations to seek a peaceful, proper solution on Syria," Xinhua quoted Hong as saying.

His remarks came in response to a US move to carry out military action without UN approval and the accusation levelled by the US that Russia has taken the Security Council "hostage" on Syria.

China restricts access to diplomatic archives over documents showing Senkakus as part of Japan

Hong-LeiTokyo, Feb 1 : China has limited access to diplomatic documents at the Foreign Ministry's archives since early January, because a 1950 government paper describes the Senkaku Islands as part of Japanese territory, sources have said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei, however, said that access to the documents has been denied as the facility is `in the process of upgrading its computer system for technical reasons'.

Japan creating Diaoyu Islands tension: China

/Hong-LeiBeijing, Jan 18 : China Friday accused Japan of creating tensions over the Diaoyu Islands, Xinhua reported.

"The Japanese side has continued to take negative acts on the Diaoyu Islands issue for a period of time, and organised its Self Defence Force planes to interrupt Chinese planes' normal flights," Hong Lei, a foreign ministry spokesperson, said during a daily press briefing.

"Such moves, which highlight military implications and create tensions, go against the trend that all the nations in the region should peacefully solve conflicts through talks," Hong said.

When asked to comment on the 50th anniversary of Indo-China war, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said that China was ready to work in cooperation with India in the spirit of looking forward.

Lei called on governments of both countries to enhance communication and deepen strategic cooperative partnership for the benefit of people of both countries.
