Nokia Siemens Networks to upgrade mobile services network of Idea CellularOne of the world’s largest telecommunications solutions providers – Nokia Siemens Networks announced on Thursday that it has got a deal to upgrade the existing mobile services network of Idea Cellular, a mobile operator in India.

Nokia Siemens Networks declared that it will upgrade the Idea Cellular’s network in 22 telecom service areas to enable the mobile operator to carry high-end data to offer GPRS services, which will be enabled by the GPRS (general packet radio service) technology and Unified Charging Solution (UCS evolve) of Nokia Siemens Networks.

According to Nokia Siemens Networks, it will add GPRS capability in 10 Idea telecom service areas, while it will spread out the existing GPRS capability in 12 other areas. The upgrading Idea mobile network will help making “multimedia messaging, email, web browsing, online music and other mobile services” accessible to Idea subscribers by March 2010.

Nokia Siemens Networks revealed that the Idea telecom service areas, where the GPRS capability will be added, include Mumbai, Orissa, Tamil Nadu – Chennai, Kolkata – West Bengal, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Punjab, and Assam & North East. And the areas, where the existing GPRS capacity will be expanded, include Delhi, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh East, Uttar Pradesh West, Haryana, Kerala, Bihar, Maharashtra and Goa, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Gujarat.

Under the deal, Nokia Siemens Networks will also deploy a charging solution, which will enable Idea Cellular to have single system throughout these locations for real time charging of the new services for both prepaid and postpaid subscribers.

With upgrading its network in 22 areas, the fifth largest telecom operator in India – Idea Cellular is looking to cash the flourishing and money spinning “value added data services market” of India.
