Nawaz cannot contest election until verdict in hijacking case: Sindh AG

Nawaz cannot contest election until verdict in hijacking case: Sindh AGIslamabad, June 10 : Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Nawaz Sharif cannot contest polls until an appeal against his conviction in the plane hijacking conspiracy cases is under adjudication in the Supreme Court (SC), Sindh Advocate General Muhammad Yousaf Leghari has said.

Talking to reporters on the SC premises, Leghari said: "Not in my official capacity, but in my personal opinion, Nawaz cannot contest polls as long as his appeal ... is under adjudication before the SC."

Earlier, the Supreme Court on Monday directed the Sindh Advocate General to reply Tuesday on missing records of the "plane hijacking conspiracy case" from the Sindh High Court (SHC).

A five-member larger bench also rejected objections raised by the Sindh Government over the maintainability of Nawaz's appeal against his conviction.

The court observed that the objections were `misconceived'. Appearing on notice, Leghari said the petitioner was not in jail and neither had he been bailed out.

He argued that the petition was therefore time barred, as "the appellant filed the appeal after eight years," the Daily Times reported. (ANI)
