Massa drives first laps in kart after accident

Felipe-MassaSao Paulo, Brazil  - Brazilian Formula 1 driver Felipe Massa returned to the tracks two months after a serious accident in the Hungarian Grand Prix, though only to do a few laps in a kart, Brazilian media reported Tuesday.

Massa, 28, did six laps at Granja Viana, near São Paulo on Monday. He reportedly had no problems in the tests, and only cut them short due to the heavy rain. According to sports website globoesporte. com, Massa was planning further tests on the karting track this week.

Spectators were asked not to take photos or recordings of Massa, who drove a red kart in a green and yellow helmet and a Ferrari suit.

Massa is recovering from a serious accident he suffered in July in tests prior to the Hungarian Grand Prix. As a result of the crash, the Ferrari driver is set to miss the remainder of the 2009 Formula 1 season.

Although Massa has stated his hope of competing in his home Grand Prix in Brazil on October 18 in Sao Paulo or in November 1 in Abu Dhabi, Montezemolo has gone on record as saying he does not expect him to be back in the paddock until next year.

In late November, however, Massa is set to return to motor racing in a charity karting event in the southern Brazilian city of Florianopolis. The race is also set to feature among others Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher and Brazilian Formula 1 driver Rubens Barrichello.(dpa)
