LG, Samsung to showcase OLED TVs at CES

LG, Samsung to showcase OLED TVs at CESSouth Korean giants, LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics are both planning to showcase their own organic light-emitting diodes, or OLED televisions separately at the upcoming the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

LG will showcase a 55-inch set based on OLED while its rival Samsung will display a yet to be ready product at the show. Samsung has not announced anything officially and has only said that its CES related announcements will come on 9 January, a day before th beginning of the event.

LG has not announced the price but a company official said that the product might go on sale in the forth quarter. According to analysts, the OLED based televisions will have a starting price of about $5,000. The technology allows TVs to be very thing and LG is likely to release televisions that are 4 millimeters thick and weight 16.5 pounds.

The technology is already in use in high-end smartphones and offers impressive colors and pictures. The technology has not been used widely on larger screens yet. LG and Samsung have already shown prototype OLED TVs at the annual CES show in revious years but have not launched the product yet.
