Kolkata celebrates National Science Day

National-Science-DayKolkata, Feb 28 : Scientists from across the world participated in lecture sessions at various research institutes here to celebrate National Science Day Friday, to commemorate the discovery of Raman Effect by Indian physicist C. V. Raman.

Raman made the path-breaking discovery related to scattering of light Feb 28, 1928. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics in 1930. The day is designated as National Science Day in the country.

The celebrations began with discussions and lectures at India's oldest research institute - Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science - where Raman worked from 1907 to 1933 and performed several key experiments that led to the finding.

A science march was organised by Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) from Park Circus grounds in central Kolkata to the museum premises.

An exhibition on Indian mathematician Srinivas Ramanujan was also opened to the public at BITM.

Leading schools encouraged students to participate in competitions centred on science to foster interest for basic science subjects.(IANS)
