Karnataka sees no conviction related to cyber crime

cyber crime Despite the heavy talks regarding cyber crime including hacking, vulgar e-mails and online frauds by cyber experts in Karnataka, not even a single person has been convicted for the cyber since the setting of IT Act in 2000.

This piece of news was forwarded by DG of Corps of Detectives (CoD) D V Guruprasad at the 3rd anniversary celebrations of the cyber lab at the CoD headquarters in Bangalore.

"The cyber police station was inaugurated in 2001, a few months after the IT Act 2000 were passed, yet only 307 cases have been registered in the past nine years. The annual average of cases is 37," said Guruprasad.

The convictions would obviously be low as most of the investigating officers themselves don't know much about cyber crime. While tracing an example of a multi-crore rupees scam in Belgaum, Guruprasad specified, "A year ago, there was a multi-level marketing scam to the tune of Rs. 200 crore, and it was registered in Bellary. A lot of evidence was seized and on one occasion, when our team went to that police station, the personnel had secured some desktops and laptops. Surprisingly, there were no hard disks in them."

There are very few with proper information about cyber crimes, even after the commencement of the IT Act in 2009.

Guruprasad concluded that there is a dire need of educating prosecutors and the judiciary on how to investigate and punish cyber criminals.
