Kapil Sibal urges IITs to produce technology

Kapil Sibal urges IITs to produce technologyUnion Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal, at the convocation of IIT Delhi, said that IITs should work to produce technology not only graduates to serve the nation better.

The Indian Institutes of Technology should also work towards creating efficient faculty, required to produce quality graduates.

Mr. Sibal said, "The main challenges confronting the country are poverty, diseases and environment pollution and these should also form focal points of research."

Despite having a large number of technical institutes, the young graduates are not qualified enough to turn India into a knowledge economy due to lack of quality faculty.

IITs are required to share their well trained faculty and contribute in the public utility programs besides acting as catalysts in growth of quality technical education in the country.

Mr. Sibal added, "The IITs should become centres of quality research. The IITs can play a major mentoring role in creating quality faculty."

The HRD minister conferred Distinguished Alumni Award on Sharad Malik and K Ananth Krishnan at IIT-D convocation besides honoring eminent scientists on the occasion.
