ISI responsible for Afghanistan unrest: Krishna

ISI responsible for Afghanistan unrest: KrishnaNew York, Sep 24 : Indian External Affairs Minister S. M. Krishna has said here that Pakistan’s Inter Service Intelligence (ISI) continues to play a disruptive role in Afghanistan.

In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Krishna said they (ISI and Taliban) are still together and working in tandem.

He warned against external interference in Afghanistan’s political process and called for a political settlement. India doesn’t believe that war can be a solution for solving any problem, he added.

Krishna said if there were internal differences within Afghanistan, leaders of that country would sort it out by themselves.

He also downplayed reports of electoral fraud in Afghanistan, saying it happens in every election.

He also said India’s role in Afghanistan was to help them stabilize on their infrastructure development. India has committed 1.2 billion dollars for a host of reconstruction projects ranging from roads and bridges to power transmission lines and small development projects.

Krishna’s comments emerge in the backdrop of a statement of a top US commander, that Pakistan still supports insurgency activities in Afghanistan.

According to American media reports senior leaders of major Afghan insurgent groups are based in Pakistan and are linked with Al-Qaeda and other extremist groups.

The report also said these insurgent groups were aided by the ISI.

It also stated that senior Taliban leaders are using their shelter in Pakistan to stoke a widening campaign of violence in northern and western Afghanistan. (ANI)
