IIT, IIM faculty declines fresh pay scale proposals

IITs-IIMsThe revised pay scale notification by Human Resource Development Ministry failed to please the faculty of IITs and IIMs, the country's top institutes of higher education.

The IIT faculty is meeting on Monday, while professors of IIMs also proposed to meet this week to decide next course of action. The faculty from National Institutes of Technology (NIT) is also likely to follow the suit.

The faculty termed the recent developments as an infringement of autonomy and decided to submit a joint charter to the ministry asking pay hike and more autonomy. The vice-president of All IITs Faculty Federation, said: "Faculty Fora/Associations of all seven IITs have decided not to accept the latest offer from the HRD Ministry with regard to the new pay scales for Centrally Funded Technical Institutes. We will be meeting on Monday to take stock of the situation and plan further action."

The professors threatened to stall teaching activities and mass resignations, if their demands are not heeded by the concerned ministry. The ministry's move to introduce a new cadre of contract basis lecturer in Pay Band 3 (Rs 15,600-39,100) with AGP of Rs 6000 was fiercely opposed by IIT faculty. They also seek incentives from the government, similar to those provided to their counterparts in ISRO, DRDO and CSIR.
