Budapest, March 28 : Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban submitted to Cornel Marculescu, executive director of the International Swimming Federation (FINA), an official bid to hold the 2021 World Aquatics Championships in Budapest.

The World Aquatics Championships comprised of swimming, diving, open water swimming, synchronized swimming and water polo, reports Xinhua.

The official media office of the Prime Minister said the talks accompanying the submission of the bid were "in an extraordinarily positive atmosphere."

Istvan Simicsko, the state secretary in charge of sports, and Tamas Gyarfas, president of the Hungarian Swimming Federation, also attended the ceremony.

Gyarfas had already told FINA in February that Hungary would bid for the World Championships.

FINA will make its final decision among the candidates July 19, the opening day of the Barcelona World Championships. At that time FINA's 22-member executive will choose the winner by secret ballot.

Other bidding candidates include China, South Korea, Japan and the United Arab Emirates.(IANS)
