Two men associated with HDFC Bank have been arrested for harassing a woman, asking her to repay Rs 73,000 her former boss owed the bank.

The Bhandup police said the accused, Mohammed Riyaz and Abbas Sayyed, from September 14 repeatedly called the woman, who used to work as an accounts manager for the man who took the loan, on her cellphone and when she switched it off, they called her residence.

The accused are in their early thirties. “They called and told me my former employer had taken a loan from the bank, and as he had failed to repay the money, I should return it,” the woman said in her complaint.

“I spoke to my former employer about the call and he assured me the bank would not call me again.”

A few days later, the calls resumed, and she began keeping her cellphone switched off.

“They then began calling my house, and told my father-in-law that I am having an affair with my former employer, and that he had taken the loan to spend on me,” the woman said in her complaint. “They threatened to tell others about it and also threatened to kill my mother-in-law.”

The two men, employed as consultants with the recovery department of HDFC Bank, were arrested last week on charges of outraging the modesty of a woman and criminal intimidation. They were later released on bail.

“The family seems to be strong, and the phone calls made by the accused have not affected them,” said Vilas Shinde, senior police inspector at Bhandup police station.

An HDFC spokesperson refused to comment.
