Government to soon grant IIT status to IT-BHU: HRD Minister

Kapil SibalUnion HRD Minister Kapil Sibal said that revamping country's education system is his top agenda and it should not be misconceived as political agenda of any political party.

Government's education policies would be designed based on the needs of the land for making the system more efficient and pragmatic.

The HRD Minister, who was here to attend the convocation of BHU, said that government would soon confer the status of IIT to the Institute of Technology-Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) as the matter has already been approved. Sibal said that 22 State Education Boards have unanimously asked for the country to have core syllabus in the country.

He lamented that just 12.4 per cent students passing intermediate are going for higher studies due to faults in our education policies.

The Minister said that it is indispensable at this point of time to open the education sector for foreign and private players and to bring about quality education.

There is a huge shortage of skilled workforce across all sectors in the World in general and in India in particular. The demand can be met only through quality education and bring talent from the poor families by offering them equal opportunities for higher education.
