Google admits tampering with Arunachal Pradesh boundary on Google Earth

GoogleStarting a fresh controversy, Google Inc, through its popular Google Earth program, has portrayed some parts of Indian hilly state Arunachal Pradesh under Chinese Geographical Regions in its satellite maps, at a time when crucial Sino-Indian talks are ongoing between two countries over border issues.

Most of the regions, including major cities like Itanagar and Tawang, are marked under China; besides tampering with the boundaries of the state, causing flutter in New Delhi and Arunachal Pradesh. Expressing concerns over such a trend, former BJP MP from the state, Kiren Rijiju, said: "This map surfaced just when the two countries were to discuss the border dispute. Had Google changed the names of Chinese locations, Beijing would have summoned Google officials. India, too, should deal with it firmly."

Meanwhile, Google is said to have admitted its mistake and said that it would soon rectify the maps. A company spokesperson said: "Earlier, this week, as part of routine update to Google Earth, we published new data for the Arunachal Pradesh region that changed the depiction of certain place names in the product. The change was a result of a mistake in our processing of new map data."
