Energy group Vattenfall Q3 earnings increase on Nordic operations

Energy group VattenfallStockholm - Swedish state-owned energy group Vattenfall on Thursday posted higher operating profits for third-quarter 2008, boosted by its operations in the Nordic region.

Operating profit before tax and interest was 5.59 billion kronor (726 million dollars), up 17 per cent year-on-year.

Third-quarter turnover increased by 17 per cent to 37 billion kronor, while the net profit fell some 29 per cent to 2.48 billion kronor.

Washington, October 30 : Computer engineers and scholars at the University of Florida have created a virtual Chinese city that can help people familiarise themselves with the sights and experiences they may encounter during their first trip to China.

The federally-funded ‘Second China Project’, as the researchers named it, was undertaken with objective of educating and preparing foreign service or other government professionals so that they would be fully prepared and ready to work when they visit China.

Hong Kong stocks surge by 13 per cent on interest rate cutHong Kong - Hong Kong stocks shot up by nearly 13 per cent Thursday to record their second double-digit rise of the week as a cut in interest rates boosted confidence in the market.

The blue-chip Hang Seng index gained 1,627.78 points, or 12.82 per cent, to close the day at 14,329.85 after a 50 point overnight cut in interest rates in the US. Turnover was 75.1 billion Hong Kong dollars (9.68 billion US dollars).

 Sun TV Rolls Out Its FM Station At Siliguri Sun TV Network, promoted by Kalanidhi Maran, set up its FM Radio Station at Siliguri of West Bengal under the brand 'S FM' from 28 October through its subsidiary South Asia FM Ltd.

The listeners of Siliguri can tune to the station at 93.5 MHz frequency.

The South Indian company believes that the programs of the station will cater to the needs of all age groups.

With this, the total number of operational FM Stations of Sun TV has gone up to 43. The company holds licenses for 45 FM radio stations across India.

Deutsche reports third-quarter profit despite financial crisis

Frankfurt - In spite of the market turmoil unleashed by the world financial crisis, Deutsche Bank AG reported Thursday a third-quarter profit helped along by new accounting rules.

Germany's biggest bank said net profit in the three months to the end of September came in at 414 million euros (546.3 million dollars). This compares with a 1.63-billion-euro profit in the same period last year.

"After a period of exceptional market turbulence, the outlook for our business remains challenging," Deutsche chief Josef Ackermann said releasing the results.

"We will balance our dividend policy with our commitment to conserving capital strength in a highly uncertain environment," he said.
