Force India-Mercedes extend engine partnership

Force-India-MercedesSilverstone (England), March 28 : Sahara Force India has extended its association with Mercedes-Benz and will use its engines from the 2014 season when new regulations come into effect.

The long-term agreement will see Mercedes-Benz supply Force India with a complete power unit, transmission and all associated ancillary systems in 2014 when 1.6 litre turbocharged V6 engines replace the existing 2.4 litre V8s.

Mercedes has been Force India's engine supplier since 2009. "These strong links and the growing competitiveness of Force India helped pave the way for an expansion of the existing partnership to also include the supply of the gearbox and hydraulic systems," said a Mercedes statement.

Commenting on the extended partnership, Force Indian team principal Vijay Mallya said: "Our new agreement with Mercedes-Benz for the coming years is the most significant in the history of Force India. With new powertrain regulations being introduced next year, I can't think of a better partner to work with as Formula One enters a new and exciting era. The agreement gives us the long-term stability we require and will enable us to continue our journey towards the front of the grid."

Mercedes executive director Toto Wolf added: "It is a significant milestone to announce our first long-term agreement for powertrain supply under the 2014 regulations. This long-term agreement offers excellent value in terms of the balance between price and performance." (IANS)
