Dravid hit on the jaw, not likely to take further part

Rahul Dravid Rahul Dravid had to retire hurt on Monday after suffering an injury on the jaw. The incident occurred after a short ball from Shahadat Hossain struck him on the side of the helmet. Batting on 111, Dravid was immediately taken to the Square Hospital in Panthopath where he has been kept under observation.

Manager Arshad Ayub confirmed that Dravid had suffered a fracture in one of the facial bones and said it was unlikely that he would take further part in the match. “He has a severe sprain in his jaw and has been kept under observation at our ICU,” said Dr Fajlur Haque, under whose care Dravid is recuperating.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president, A. H. M. Mustafa Kamal, visited the player after the day's play. “He is a lot better and when I visited him he was having his meal. I have spoken to the doctors and they told me that there are two hairline fractures. They say it’s not serious and he can go back to India if he wants to on Tuesday,” Kamal told HT.

BCCI secretary N. Srinivasan said a final call on whether Dravid would stay back or leave would be taken later. “We will go by the doctors and the reports. A call will be taken once we get the updates,” he said.

It was in the second over with the second new ball that Shahadat hit Dravid. Shahadat, who had hit Ricky Ponting on the helmet at Fatullah in April 2006, said Monday's incident was a greater achievement. “Against Ponting, it was with an old ball. It was a new ball today. Even then, it feels good to hit someone like Dravid, who was batting past 100,” he said.

“We had a plan to bowl short, particularly to Sehwag and Dravid, because Indians do not play bouncers very well. We have seen they keep leaving short balls. We did that and almost got them. It was a pity that Dravid's was a no ball,” Shahadat said.
