Disney’s New Science Series to have a Female Protagonist

In a collaborative effort, Disney, Google and NASA, will create ‘Miles from Tomorrowland’, a new science series, aiming to inspire young girls to pursue a career in science and technology, in a bid to shamble the stereotype of male dominated technology sector.

The new TV show, inspired by female NASA astronaut Yvonne D. Cagle, is about a space adventure-seeking boy named Miles Callisto, helped by his smart sister, Loretta who codes to solve problems that the family encounters during their adventures in space. Not to miss their mother, Phoebe, the captain, who drives the family spaceship!

Sascha Paladino, the creator of the show, stated, “We want all kids to get interested in science, but we really felt that it was important for girls in particular to see strong female characters”.

Julie Ann Crommett is leading the Google's effort to educate the media on computer science. She stressed that they want to inspire young kids to think about being makers of technology and not just consumers of technology. As according to a 2014 Google survey, the data on gender and careers showed that media can play a huge factor in girls' decisions to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math.

Google's research also showed a direct link between the scarcity of media coverage of women in science and subsequent low rate of girls pursuing science, technology, engineering and math careers. Furthermore, the percentage of women entering into computer science studies declined to 18% in 2009 from 34% in 1984. The study noted that only 27% of all professionals in computer science are women.

It has been reported that the representatives of Disney visited Google headquarters in Silicon Valley and NASA's Southern California base to discuss the storyline, seeking help from the technicians and space experts to present an authentic portrayal of the Callisto family, featuring in the show.

The Google's Washington D.C. office is hosting a screening of the show on Monday.
