Tehran  - A convicted rapist was publicly hanged in the northern Iranian province of Mazandaran, the Tehran daily Kayhan reported Monday.

The 24-year-old man was executed Sunday a city square of Qaemshahr after his initial death sentence was confirmed by the Supreme Court.

Murder, rape, armed robbery and drug trafficking of quantities in excess of 5 kilograms are among crimes punishable by death in Iran. (dpa)
