Nairobi/Praia  - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was due to wrap up her seven-nation Africa tour in the tiny archipelago nation of Cape Verde on Friday.

Clinton was on the last day of an eleven-day tour aimed at highlighting the Obama administration's commitment to the continent and promoting better governance.

The diplomat said that she believed the trip had been "wonderful" and had helped build better links between the US and Africa.

"This was a very important trip that both President Obama and I wanted ... to send a very clear message that the Obama Administration is committed to developing an even stronger and closer relationship with not just the government, but especially the people of Africa," she said in Liberia Thursday after meeting President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Clinton was expected to meet Prime Minister Jose Maria Neves in Cape Verde, which US officials have praised for making good use of US economic assistance, before flying back to Washington later in the day.

The secretary criss-crossed the continent in a whirlwind tour, calling on governments to end corruption, improved their democracies and improve human rights, particularly those of women.

Her tour took in Kenya, South Africa, Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria and Liberia as well as Cape Verde. (dpa)
