China should act responsibly, says Steinberg

China should act responsibly, says SteinbergJames Steinberg, a former US Deputy Secretary of States has said that the authorities in China should act responsibly mainly as it has a huge economy and military capabilities.

He said that China will not benefit from any sort of confrontation with its neighbours such as India or Japan. He was responding to the question on his views on recent troubles in Ladakh with India and in South China Sea with Japan. He urged the Chinese authorities to clarify its long term objectives and also assure its neighbours.

"I don't know what the Chinese leadership is up to, confronting India and Japan, especially when they have been trying to build strong bilateral relations. The Chinese leadership must understand, it will not benefit them in the long run. The leadership must introspect on their future strategies," Steinberg said.

Steinberg asked the new leadership in China to convince others that China is looking for a peaceful rise. He is currently working as the Dean of the Maxwell School, Syracuse University and University Professor of Social Science, International Affairs and Law, served as Deputy Secretary of State, and acted as the principal Deputy to Secretary Hillary Clinton.
