Centre must come with national pledge to fight against terrorism: BJP

ravi-shankar-prasadNew Delhi, Feb 23 : The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday accused the Congress-led UPA Government of adopting a casual approach in dealing with the ghastly incidents of terror attacks.

"The unfortunate incident in Hyderabad has raised a serious concern about terrorism. About 25 such incidents have occurred and more than 500 innocent Indians have been killed since the UPA Government has come to power. Now, the time has arrived that the government must stop politics on such incidents and take some concrete steps honestly. The Centre must bring a national pledge against terrorism going beyond vote-bank politics," said BJP chief spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, while talking to reporters at a press conference here.

"We must not take terrorism in a casual anymore. We would like the government to take concrete steps with the help and coordination of various state governments. The BJP will support the government if such an action is taken," he added.

However, he also warned the government not to weaken the states' rights by bringing any such legislation.

Meanwhile, Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi urged all political parties to think about the present situation in the country and work accordingly.

"All the political parties should think about the situation in the country at present. We have been saying that terrorism is a big problem before the nation and we will have to fight against it unitedly. The government is willing to create a consensus with all the parties, so that we can fight against it effectively," said Alvi.

Earlier in the day, senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu alleged that the Congress-led UPA Government lacks political will to combat terror.

"The government''s approach is casual. It lacks political will to combat terror. It has not understood the dimensions and depth of the enemy''s strategy to weaken India," he told media here after inspecting the bomb blast sites in Hyderabad.

The death toll in the Hyderabad twin blasts reached 16 on Friday with two more persons succumbing to their injuries in a hospital. (ANI)
