CBI unravels multi-crore scam in Tata Memorial Hospital

CBI unravels multi-crore scam in Tata Memorial HospitalTata Memorial Hospital is in news these days for two reasons. Firstly it won the prestigious Jamalal Bajaj Award for 'best professional services in the healthcare industry.' Secondly it is under CBI scanner for a multi-crore scam.

The CBI officials claim to unravel a 100 crore scam relating to smuggling of medicines. Officials claim that anti-cancer medicines from the dispensary attached to the hospital were sold to private chemists for a commission.

A case of cheating, conspiracy and forgery against six employees—assistant medical superintendent Rekha Batura, dispensary office-in-charge Y B Dixit, pharmacists P B Dhake, Namita Deshpande and Leena Nakhare and upper division clerk Chetna Pawar has been filed by CBI. CBI also suspects involvement of some senior employees.

TMH director Rajendra Badwe said that the hospital would “cooperate in toto’’ with the probe.

CBI (western zone) joint director Rishi Raj Singh said medicines meant to be sold to patients at the hospital were illegally sold in the open market.

CBI officials said the accused also sold ‘protocol medicines’ developed by the department of biotechnology. However TMH officials denied this charge.
