Car sales rise 13.4% in Scotland
The latest figures released have shown that the car sales have risen 13.4 per cent during the month of June indicating that the industry is recovering in Scotland.
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said that the new sales rose to 214,957 during the month of June compared to 189,514 units sold during the same month of the previous year. Private car sales contributed 21.3 per cent of the growth while company car sales rose 6.1 per cent. June recorded the 16th straight month of growth in car sales in Scotland.
Data also showed that the new car sales rose to 1,163,623 during the first half of the year compared to 1,057,680 during the same period of the previous year. The SMTA has increased its forecast for new registrations in 2013 to
190,000 compared to an original forecast of 185,000.
Douglas Robertson, chief executive officer of Scottish Motor Trade Association said that consumer confidence in rising indicating that they believe that the effects of recession might be reducing in Scotland. Others said that attractive discounts offered by dealers also helped push up sakes in Scotland.
Mr Robertson said, "We are very pleased to note increased demand over the last year. Private buyers are driving this demand and again accounted for more than 55% of our new car registrations in June. Scotland has always been more of a private buyers market than the rest of the UK."
