Burger King to Remove Fountain Drinks from its Kids’ Menu

Burger King has taken an initiative to improve its offering to children under the Kids' Menu by adding healthy options. The fast food chain has removed fountain drinks from the kids' meals.

In the revised menu, fat-free milk, 100% apple juice and low-fat chocolate milk will be offered. It seems that other fast-food companies are also making similar changes. In January, Wendy's made the same changes.

In 2013, McDonald's removed pop from its Happy Meals. These efforts are being made to control America's obesity problem. With more such changes, it has become difficult for children to get soft drinks at fast-food joints.

Alex Macedo, president of Burger King North America, said that they have made the change, "as part of our ongoing effort to offer our guests options that match lifestyle needs".

Soft drinks can be taken at Burger King, but it is no more an option on the Kids Meal menu. There is a growing demand by consumers and activists that fast-food chains should improve the quality of their food.

It now seems that the move has taken place under the pressures from advocacy groups. Last week, McDonald's announced that it is eliminating human antibiotics from its chicken supply in the next two years.

Dunkin' Donuts also announced last week that it will remove a controversial whitening agent that it uses in the powdered sugar sprinkled on the top of some its doughnuts.

Experts affirmed that these changes can have a significant impact on future beverage industry sales, as consumer develops its beverage consumption habits as kids.

Margo Wootan, director of nutrition policy for the consumer advocacy group Center for Science in the Public Interest, said that these changes will help children develop better eating habits, which will continue in the future as well.
