U.K. plug-in car sales jump more than 50% to 29,117 units in April 2023

New passenger car sales/registrations in the UK increased by nearly 12 per cent year-over-year to almost 133,000 units in April this year, thanks in part to strong demand for plug-in electric cars.
According to data shared by the Society of Motor Manufacturers & Traders (SMMT), new passenger car registrations in the United Kingdom increased 11.9 per cent year-over-year to settle at 132,990 units last month. It was the ninth consecutive month of passenger car sales growth in the country. In the same month, sales of plug-in electric cars also grew, reaching the highest year-over-year level in as many as fifteen months.
In April 2022, a total of 29,117 units of new plug-in cars were registered, up 50.5 per cent year-over-year. This result represents nearly 21.9 per cent of the company’s total sales volume in the month under review. In the corresponding month of last year, it was 16.2 per cent.
Sales of all-electric cars (BEVs) grew even faster. Last month, more than 20,500 units of BEVs were registered. This figure represents a growth of roughly 60 per cent year-over-year. In terms of market share, this sub-segment of the passenger car market reached higher than 15 per cent.
More precisely, sales of plug-in electric cars in the British market in April 2023 included 20,522 units of BEVs, up 59 per cent year-over-year at a market share of 15.4 per cent. Sales of PHEVs jumped 33 per cent to 8,595 units. In terms of market share, this sub-segment accounted for 6.5 per cent.
Total plug-in car registrations, thus, reached 29,117 units, up 50 per cent year-over-year at a market share of 21.9 per cent.
When it comes to new plug-in car registrations year-to-date (YTD), sales of BEVs jumped 26 per cent year-over-year to 96,752 units at a market share of 15.4 per cent. PHEV sales grew 11 per cent year-over-year to 40,360 units at a market share of 6.4 per cent.
Total sales of plug-in cars in the first four months of this year increased 21 per cent to settle at 137,112 units. In terms of market share, this segment accounted for 21.9 per cent.
For reference, in the twelve months of last year, slightly more than 368,000 units of new passenger plug-in cars were sold or registered in the British market, with an average market share toughing the mark of 22.8 per cent.
