Hyundai Motor America, the American arm of South Korean automobile giant Hyundai Motor Group, has confirmed that it has enjoyed strong sales of E-GMP-based electric cars in the month of April this year.
In April 2023, Hyundai sold a total of 70,812 vehicles in the U.S., up almost 15 per cent year-over-year. In fact, it was the company’s best April ever. During the first four months of this year, the company sold 255,261 units, up 15.3 per cent year-over-year.
All-electric car sales of the south Korean car brand also increased. In particular, sales of the E-GMP-based vehicles, which includes the Ioniq 5 crossover SUV and Ioniq 6 electric sedan, also reported a strong growth. It was for the very first time when sales of the E-GMP-based Hyundai electric cars in the U.S. exceeded 3,000 units in a month.
More precisely, sales of Hyundai BEVs (excluding sales of the Kona Electric) amounted to 3,213 in the month under review. It was the first-ever sales result above 3,000 units in a single month. The year-over-year growth was 20 per cent, with the Ioniq 5/Ioniq 6’s share accounting for 4.5 per cent of the brand’s total volume.
It is worth-mentioning here that the Ioniq 5 noted a decline of 13 per cent in sales from 2,323 units last year. Meanwhile, sales of the Ioniq 6 e-SUV in the second month on the market reached very close to 1,000 units.
However, one should not ignore the fact that the Ioniq 5 isn’t eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit as it is an imported model. The model’s ineligibility for the federal tax credit may adversely affect its sales in the coming months also, but the company is quite confident about its future, thanks to its planned huge investments in the country.
Year-to-date sales (YTD) of Hyundai BEV includes 8,059 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5 (down 10 per cent year-over-year), and 1,112 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 (new model). Data for the Hyundai Kona Electric wasn’t revealed by the company. Thus, the company’s total sales in the Ioniq family jumped 3 per cent year-over-year to 9,171 units (3.6 per cent market share).
For reference, during the twelve months of last year, the American arm of the South Korean manufacturer sold 22,982 units of the Hyundai Ioniq 5, which represented nearly 3.2 per cent of the company’s total sales volume.
