Global plug-in electric car sales surge to new all-time monthly record in June 2022

Global sales of passenger plug-in electric cars set a new all-time monthly record in June 2022 despite various odds and challenges. According to fresh EV-Volumes data shared by Jose Pontes, a total of 913,479 new passenger plug-in electric cars were sold or registered in June this year, up 54 per cent year-over-year. The figures are enough to suggest that the world is really very close to hit 1+ million units per month and 10+ million per year.
Even as conventional hybrids kept struggling with third consecutive month of year-over-year decline, the rechargeable car market of the world enjoyed a healthy growth.
Global plug-in electric car market’s share grew to 16 per cent, while all-electric cars (BEVs) saw their share hitting a 12 per cent record for the first time. PHEVs’ market share recorded at 4 per cent.
More precisely, nearly 685,000 units of BEVs (up 65 per cent year-over-year) and 228,000 units of PHEVs (up 29 per cent year-over-year) were registered in the month under review. In total, 913,479 plug-in passenger cars were registered, up 54 per cent year-over-year.
Year to date (YTD), more than 4.1 million new passenger plug-in electric cars were registered worldwide. For reference, nearly 6.5 million plug-in cars were registered in the full year of 2021.
YTD, nearly 3.05 million units of BEVs (with market share of 8.8 per cent) and 1.11 million units of PHEVs (3.2 per cent of market share) were registered. The total figure reached 4,161,123 units, with market share of 12 per cent.
The Tesla Model Y crossover SUV and Model 3 electric sedan emerged as the two best-selling models last month, with registration of 97,950 units and 53,768 units, respectively. The Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV micro car followed at the third position with total registrations of 46,250 units.
Places from 4th to 7th were secured by four BYD electric models, while German automobile giant Volkswagen’s ID.4 grabbed the 8th spot with 16,462 units registered. By the end of June, the Tesla Model Y got 314,921 plug-in cars registered, while the Model 3 accounted for 219,095 units. The Wuling Hong Guang MINI EV, BYD Song (BEV + PHEV), BYD Qin Plus (BEV + PHEV), BYD Han (BEV + PHEV) and the Volkswagen ID.4 accounted for 207,829 units, 159,091 units, 132,495 units, and 97,225 units, and 63,597 units, respectively.
