Zero Motorcycles, an American manufacturer of electric motorcycles formerly known as Electricross, has announced that it has gained European type-approval for its upcoming DSR/X electric ADV.

The announcement about European type-approval for the DSR/X electric ADV follows disclosure of some U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filings that revealed the brand’s plans to offer the new electric two-wheeler in 14.4-kWh and 15.3-kWh Z-Force battery configurations.

Some unofficial reports also suggested that the manufacturer would present a new interior permanent magnet (IPM) 5T motor sometime in 2023 for a potential flagship model within Zero’s lineup. Thus, it wouldn’t be a matter of surprise if the DSR/X comes equipped with that powerful motor. While the European type-approval documents didn’t confirm that possibility, they revealed some new details about the aforementioned platform.

As per new details, the DSR/X electric ADV could also be made available in an up-spec trim with a 17.3-kWh Z-Force cell option, in addition to the aforementioned 14.4-kWh and 15.3-kWh Z-Force battery options. However, the upcoming electric two-wheeler will likely not deliver range required for long journeys. As per the filings, the 14.4-kWh battery option will deliver a range of up to 91 miles on a single charge, while the 15.6-kWh pack will deliver a range of up to 100 miles. The up-spec trim with 17.3-kWh battery will reach 107 miles per single charge.

The type-approval documents also list that the Zero DSR/X e-bike’s weigh at 257 kg (roughly 567 pounds), and wheelbase at 60 inches. Variable height numbers provided for the e-bike indicate that the electric model could sport an adjustable windscreen, while different width figures indicate that it will offer optional luggage solution.

When it comes to the performance of the upcoming DSR/X, the European type-approval is somewhat confusing as released documents don’t provide an exact figure representing its power. However, some experts are of the view that the DSR/X will be a 40kW (53.6 hp) machine, the same as that of the SR/F.

While we don’t have a power figure for the DSR/X, it is confirmed that the SR/F’s motor produce 110 hp. The same can be expected from the DSR/X. The existing DSR’s motor is rated at 22kW (30 hp) continuous power with an absolute peak of 70 hp.

More precise information and details on the DSR/X electric ADV are expected to be announced by the California, U.S.-based manufacturer in the coming months.
