Fast-growing Chinese manufacturer BYD Limited has set a new monthly sales record by selling more than 200,000 units of its plug-in electric cars in the month of September 2022. According to stats released by the Shenzhen, Guangdong-based manufacturer, BYD sold a total of 200,973 units of passenger plug-in cars last month, up 187 per cent from the corresponding month of 2021. Setting a new record, the monthly sales figure represents a considerable difference of 26,996 units from the previous record set in August.

In other words, the Chinese manufacturer almost tripled its sales year-over-year, thanks to higher local demand in addition to quickly increased exports in the month under review. A deeper analysis of the stats also revealed that September represents the seventh consecutive monthly sales record, which proves that the company is growing at an unprecedented rate.

Using social media platform Twitter, BYD stated, “September 2022 has been a successful month with BYD sales reaching 201259 NEVs sold in the global market, contributing to a YOY increase of 151.2%! We strive to continue innovating towards excellence and providing you with green energy solutions!”

The overwhelming majority of the company’s sales came from the local market of China, and exports stood for smaller fraction of the total sales volume. In the month under review, sales of both all-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) were record high. BEVs amounted to nearly 95,000, while PHEVs surpassed the mark of 106,000 units, marking the segment’s first 6-digit result ever.

September sales in the plug-in car segment include 94,941 units, up 162 per cent year-over-year; PHEVs amounted for 106,032 units, up 214 per cent from the corresponding month of last year. Thus, total plug-in cars sales jumped 187 per cent to settle at 200,973.

A total of 7,736 BYD plug-in cars were exported to foreign markets, which also set a new record. Besides passenger cars, the company also sold 286 commercial EVs.

Year-to-date (YTD), more than 1.17 million BYD plug-in electric cars were sold by the fast-growing company, including 582,130 BEVs and 593,191 PHEVs. YTD BEV sales represent a jump of 214 per cent year-over-year, while PHEV sales grew 307 per cent. Total YTD plug-in car sales grew 255 per cent to settle at 1,175,321. The BYD Song emerged as the top model, with total sales of 46,475 (BEVs and PHEVs).
