Alfa Romeo to launch E-segment all-electric SUV in U.S. in 2027

Italian luxury car brand Alfa Romeo has revealed that it is working on a new project to launch a large E-segment all-electric SUV in the US market to contend with the likes of the Tesla Model X. Larry Dominique, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Stellantis-owned brand’s American division, said in an interview that the planned EV will be large electric SUV that will have an interior size, features, and technologies ideal for North America. He also revealed that the all-electric SUV will likely hit the market in 2027, when the brand will no longer be selling gas-guzzling internal combustion engine-powered vehicles.
Admitting that Tesla is the fastest-growing premium EV maker, and that it is currently dominating the U.S. market, the top executive stressed that Alfa Romeo is different from all others.
Speaking on the topic, Dominique said, “By 2027, Alfa Romeo will no longer be selling ICE to anyone. The fastest-growing premium vehicle in the U.S.—Tesla—is kicking everyone’s ass. We think of ourselves as different from the others. We just don’t want to blend in. We’re not a gray BMW. Our customers tell us they buy Alfas because ‘You’re not that.’”
The Italian luxury car brand returned to the North America market in 2014, after a gap of 20 years. At present, it is selling the Giulia sedan, which vies with the likes of the BMW 3 Series, the Tonale crossover, and the Stelvio SUV. The Stelvio SUV is in the same segment as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, while the Tonale crossover comes underpinned by the same platform as that of the Dodge Hornet.
Alfa Romeo says that the U.S. will be the main market for the upcoming all-electric SUV, and nearly 70 per cent of sales are believed to come from this part of the globe. Details about the platform of the upcoming large E-segment all-electric SUV are not available at the moment, but a balanced smart guess suggests that it will most probably be based on parent firm Stellantis’ EV-dedicated STLA Large platform. It should be a performance vehicle measuring between 189 to 216.5 inches (roughly 4,800 to 5,500 mm). The STLA Large platform promises maximum power output of 168 to 443 horsepower. For power, it can accommodate 118-kWh battery packs capable of delivering a range of up to 500 miles (800 km).
