Aurora Products issues recall of Walnut, Trail Mix Blend Products from US retail stores

The US food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that Aurora Products is recalling its products distributed through retail stores in the U. S., Canada and in Bermuda.

The company based in Orange, Conn is recalling products from sold at Giant food stores and Stop & Shop stores due to possible contamination with Salmonella.

The potential Salmonella contamination was discovered during routine testing by an outside company. The company contacted the FDA after finding the presence of Salmonella in a container of natural walnut products.

Salmonella contamination can lead to serious and fatal infections. Elderly people, children younger than age 5, and immune-compromised, i. e. people with compromised immune systems are at greatest risk of serious infection.

Symptoms of Salmonella contamination include abdominal cramps, diarrhea and fever. They usually develop within 8 to 72 hours of consuming a contaminated product. Other symptoms include headache, chills, nausea and vomiting, lasting for a week.

According to FDA, in rare cases salmonella bacteria can result in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, arthritis and endocarditis. The agency has urged consumers to destroy the identified products or return it to the point of purchase.

Aurora has instructed the retail chains to stop distribution of the identified products and remove them from store shelves.

The affected products at Giant stores are Giant Walnuts, Cranberry Health Mix, Roasted Salt Mixed Nuts, Aurora Forest Bounty Trail Mix and Aurora No Salt Mixed Nuts. In Stop & Shop stores, the products are sold under the same names but carry the Stop & Shop logo.
