ASCI reprimands 15 firms, including Reliance, Idea, Dabur and Elder, for misleading ads

Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) and Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI)With the Consumer Complaints Council (CCC) of the Advertising Standards Council of India (ASCI) having found as many as 15 firms running misleading ads from July to October this year, the ASCI has reprimanded them for violating the council’s code.

As per the Economic Times, the companies that have been pulled up by the ASCI include telecom firms like Reliance Communications and Idea Cellular; fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) company Dabur; and Elder Pharma; and the Career Launcher coaching centre.

The Reliance Communications’ TV ad that violates the ASCI code is the one about the company being the ‘fastest mobile broadband service in India’ because the company has failed to substantiate its claim. Meanwhile, the Idea Cellular has been pulled up for its ‘walking while talking’ commercial for apparently encouraging “the unsafe act of walking while talking on the mobile phone.”

Two of Dabur commercials that need modification include the ad about its Vatika shampoo – claiming that the product ‘eliminates dandruff from first wash;’ and the Dabur Lal Oil ad that says the oil ‘leads to doubly faster growth in babies.’

Further, the ASCI deemed the Elder Pharma’s ‘Fuel’ deodorant ad, showing a woman unbuttoning a shirt, was vulgar; and the Career Launcher ad that ‘four out of five IIM call-getters in CAT'08 from Delhi Images and NCR’ were its students was an uncorroborated statement.
