Acer set to edge out Dell to be the second largest computer manufacturer in the world Standing presently at third position in computer manufacturing (on the basis of computer sales), after Hewlett-Packard and Dell, the Taipei, Taiwan based computer manufacturer Acer is all set to become the second largest computer manufacturer in the world.    

The latest global market reports are indicating that Acer is set to edge out Dell in computer sales to capture the second position on the list of the largest computer manufacturers of the world.

The reports are also signaling that the number one position of HP is also in danger due to the surging sales of Acer computers. The reports are revealing that the revenue and computer sales of Dell dropped by about 30% over the past two quarters, and HP witnessed 19% losses, but on the other hand, Acer saw around about 8% losses.    

In the first Quarter, the market share of Dell was 13.6%, while the market share of Acer was 11.6% — the market share of Dell dropped over 15% since last year, but the market share of Acer grew 10.9% since last year. The reports are saying that Acer’s netbooks and other low-cost PC models are the major contributors to the growing sales of Acer.

Meanwhile, the reports are also indicating that the period of bleak computer sales seems to be over in India. The leading computer manufacturers, such as HP, Dell, Acer, and Lenovo are claiming that their sales have started picking up from May onwards. The sales have mainly been boosted by notebooks, and the notebook sales are expected to grow 20-25 % during May-July.

According to reports, the computer vendors are claiming that their sales are growing due to bulk of the demand from the education sector due to the admission season. HP is enjoying leading position in PC segment of Indian computer market; HP has six new notebook models in the market, while Acer, with 20 new notebook models in the market, has significant presence in the Indian market.

An IDC report has reveled that the notebook market of India surged by 3% in the first quarter – January-March – of 2009, against the fourth quarter – October-December – of 2008. The notebook sales declined by 21% in the first quarter of 2009, against the first quarter of 2008. The pre-slowdown days’ notebook sales were growing at 25-30 % in India.
