WEF demotes India in latest tourism report rankings

WEF demotes India in latest tourism report rankingsIndia performed poorer than last year in travel and tourism industry as per a WEF report. This report ranked India at 68th position as compared its 62nd position last year.

World Economic Forum revealed its Travel & Tourism Competitiveness Report 2011. As per this report, international tourists find it uncomfortable to have lesser number of ATMs and hotel rooms in India.

In the report, India is placed at 12th position. This ranking covers 139 countries across world. Last year, this ranking covered 133 countries. European countries made the lead in travel competitiveness with top five countries being from Europe. Switzerland is ranked at the top with Germany, France, Austria and Sweden as second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.

China is ranked 39th in the current report. According to the report, "Travel & Tourism remains a critical economic sector worldwide. The sector is an important driver of growth and prosperity, and, particularly within developing countries, it can also play a key role in poverty reduction."

India performed very poor in policy environment in this report with 128th ranking. Report said visa permissions and policy environment in India is costlier and is more time consuming from market standards. India is ranked 112th in health and hygiene standards in the report.
