Los Gatos, California based Cryptic Studios has confirmed that it has obtained the rights to Star Trek Online, from CBS Consumer Products. The rights were previously held by Perpetual Entertainment, the San Francisco based MMO developer.
Cryptic Studios is well known for NCSoft's City of Heroes and City of Villians superhero MMOs. The studio is currently working on Champions Online.
Star Trek Online is a massively multiplayer game set in Star Trek Universe. This game will enable players to enter the future of the "Trek" universe, a time of shifting alliances and new discoveries. Players will also be able to visit many of the show's famous locations including, the elegant domes of starfleet Academy, the ancient temples of Vulcan, the towers of Qo'noS, fire Caves of Bajor, mysterious Mutara Nebula and the unexplored voids of deep space.
The players will also be able to command their own highly customizable starship as a Federation Captain of a Klingon Warrior. The RPG style leveling systems will recruit and train player's crews. The game will also cover a wide range of gameplay styles including ship-to-ship battles, boarding actions and planetside Away Team missions.
The game will use the same graphics and game-play engine that powered the previous titles of Cryptic Studios. The game will be available in both console and PC format.
The release date of the game is not announced yet, but first official footage for Star Trek Online will be unveiled at the Star Trek convention in Las Vegas on August 10.
