Two pilots die in Air show crash

CrashTwo pilots of the Indian navy died and two persons were injured as a plane taking part in the Air Show in Begumpet airport in Hyderabad crashed on a building in a residential area on Wednesday.

The HJT-16 Kiran Mk2 trainer belonging to Indian Navy's aerobatic Sagar Pawan team crashed in the Bowenpally locality near the airport before noon. Commander S K Maurya and Lt Commander Rahul Nair were killed in the crash. The series was inducted 30 years ago in the Indian navy.

The plane crashed while performing maneuver with three other planes. The plane was unable to pull up and went on a spiral after a dive when all other planes were going in different directions.

The Air show had begun on 11:05 am and a spiraling plane was seen 15 minutes into the air show. People heard a loud bang and then were able to see a large cloud of smoke coming out of the area. The plane is believed to have hit the telephone tower on top of the building before coming down.

Navy Chief Admiral Nirmal Verma said, "Both pilots are dead. They did not eject from the plane."

An inquiry has been launched to find out the cause of the accident and Verma said that it is too soon to comment.

The show was part of the India Aviation 2010 which will go on for five days from March 3-7. The event involves conference on civil aviation industry, CEOs Forum, flying display, customer demonstration flights, and exhibition and media conferences.
