Turkey has little to do with your post-pie coma
Generally it is said that an individual becomes all set for bed soon after Thanksgiving dinner as the turkey he consumes is full of tryptophan, which brings along drowsiness. This is just a myth, a line often said but not true.
Tryptophan is an amino acid. It is a precursor for the brain chemical serotonin, which is linked to healthy sleep. However, turkey doesn’t have tryptophan more than other common meats such as beef and chicken.Foods like nuts and cheeses have more tryptophan.
Tryptophan has the ability to make you feel sleepy on its own, but the presence of other amino acids can limit its effects, and many of such amino acids are present in turkey.
If you feel sleepy after eating your dinner, don’t blame the turkey, as you could be extra tired, or you might have done overeating. You’re inhale many carbs by putting potatoes, yams, stuffing, rolls and pie on top of the turkey.
A nutrition expert at Texas A&M, NicolaasDeutzcarried out a research on the real effects of tryptophan and concluded that the turkey has just a bit to do with your post-pie coma.
He said, “Turkey is not special in relation to the other meats. You just eat a lot of meat, but if you would eat a steak you would feel as satisfied as with the turkey”.
Whatever excuse you make for feeling the requirement of a post-meal nap, this Thanksgiving Day, count the nap among the ones to be thankful for.
