Sunil Mittal has no intention to buy back Vodafone’s Airtel stake

Sunil Mittal has no intention to buy back Vodafone’s Airtel stakeBharti Group has no intention to buy back nearly 4 per cent stake that British communications giant Vodafone owns in Airtel, the group's chairman Sunil Mittal said.

Vodafone owns 4.4 per cent stake indirectly in Bharti Airtel, which the British company will have to sell to meet the government's new norms that prohibits a telecom firm from holding any stake in a rival firm under Unified Licences.

But, Mr.  Mittal said he had no plans to buy the stake.  When asked if Bharti Group would buy back Vodafone's stake, Mr.  Mittal said, "We have no intention (to do that)."

When asked about the impact of steep fall in the value of rupee on the company's foreign debts, Mr.  Mittal said that the company's debt was at comfortable level.

Currently, Vodafone and Bharti Airtel operate on UASL (Unified Access Service Licence), or 2G licences, which allow telecom operators to hold a stake of up to 9.9 per cent in other telecom operators.

But, all telecom operators will have to migrate to new licences once their current permits expired.  Vodafone's permits for the Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata circles are set to expire in the final quarter of 2014.
