London, June 25 : Williams driver Pastor Maldonaldo has slammed McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton for their collision just two laps from the finish at the European Grand Prix in Valencia on Sunday.
Hamilton refused to give an inch as the Venezuelan tried to overtake as they raced through the Turn 12 chicane at 130mph.
The Williams driver bounced off the track over the kerbs and back on into the side of the McLaren.
Hamilton ended up in the concrete wall, his car wrecked, a tyre ripped off and his engine was a blazing mess.
“I don’t know why he did that. It would have been better if he had backed off a little bit and not driven so aggressively. I am not happy because I could have easily been on the podium,” The Daily Mirror quoted Maldonaldo, as saying.
“Lewis did not leave me any space. He tried to push me off the track. It is not the first time this has happened with Lewis. I think he could have avoided the contact,” he added.
Hamilton’s lead in the world championship took a heavy beating as he plummeted from first to third, and 23 points behind race winner Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso.
Williams’ Pastor Maldonado was penalized for the collision as the European Grand Prix stewards added 20 seconds to his race time. (ANI)
