Washington - Swimmer Hayley McGregory broke countrywoman Natalie Coughlin's 100-metre backstroke world record Monday during a preliminary heat at the US Olympic trials, only for the toppled record-holder to strike back moments later.
In the next heat, Coughlin swam the distance in 59.03 seconds to to both her previous women's world record in the event of 59.21 seconds, which had stood since February, and McGregory's record of 59.15 seconds, which survived just a matter of minutes. (dpa)
