London, Sep. 17 : Manchester United fans opposed to the Glazers'' ownership of the club have welcomed a potential 1.6 billion pound takeover bid from Qatar''s royal family.
According to the Mirror, the Qataris are planning the bold offer with a view to making an official approach to United''s US owners over a complete buy-out.
United fans have said they would welcome any new owner who was willing to bring supporters on board in a more sustainable business model.
"If there is a private owner thinking of buying the club, then our view is that it would be sensible of them to try to have a good relationship with supporters," said
Duncan Drasdo, chief executive of the Manchester United Supporters'' Trust (MUST).
"We would like any potential new owner of Manchester United to use the club''s own revenues to fund the football club, rather than extracting money from it, as the current owners are," he added.
"Manchester United generates enough money from its own commercial activities to compete with the very best teams in the world - as long as it does not have an owner extracting money from it. That''s the ownership model we''d like to see. We would like to see consultation with fans and for the chance for them to share in the ownership of the club, because we feel that is the best model," Drasdo said. (ANI)
