Beijing - Argentina and Nigeria were to contest the football final on a hot Saturday as the penultimate day of the Beijing Olympics saw sunshine and blue skies.
Temperatures were to soar above 30 degrees celsius for the noon start of the football match in the Bird's Nest, with mountain bikers and the canoeing athletes also set to sweat. Read more »

The competition took place in hotel corridors, generous dinners and luxury rooms. Even if no money is spent on invitations and bribes as was the case until 1999, when the scandal around the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics broke out, the fight to host the Games remains expensive. Read more »

Beijing - "We made history," "this is a dream," were some of the jubilant comments Spanish basketball players made Friday, after beating Lithuania 91-86 to reach the final of Beijing 2008.

Chinese delight as Zhang, Wang, Guo share women's singles medals

Beijing - Host nation China swept the boards on Friday at the Beijing Olympics in the women's singles table tennis, with Zhang Yining winning the gold after beating Wang Nan 4-1 in the final.
Zhang was the defending champion and took her personal tally to four gold medals from two Olympic Games, while Wang has four gold medals and one silver to her credit. Read more »

Beijing - Iranian Hadi Saei on Friday managed to successfully defend his men's 80kg taekwondo title as he won gold at the Beijing Olympics after defeating Italy's Mauro Sarmiento in the final.
There was also taekwondo gold for South Korea as Hwang Kyungseon took gold in the women's under 67kg division with a victory over Canadian Karine Sergerie. Read more »
Brazil down Belgium for football bronze

Shanghai - Belgium defeated Belgium 3-0 in Shanghai Friday with a brace from Jo and one from Diego to win the consolation of a bronze medal in the men's football tournament at the Olympics.
Werder Bremen midfielder Diego opened the scoring in the 27th minute from a pass by Rafinha. Read more »
German Schoneborn stuns field in women's modern pentathlon

Beijing - Germany's Lena Schoneborn on Friday won the women's modern pentathlon at the Beijing Olympics after setting an Olympic record in the fencing portion.
Schoneborn took the gold with 5,792 points, beating Britain Heather Fell by 40 points. Ukrainian Victoria Tereshuk took bronze with 5,672 points. Read more »

Stockholm - Sweden's hopes of clinching at least one gold medal at the Beijing Olympics rest on the shoulders of a 42-year-old table tennis player.
Jorgen Persson, who made his Olympic debut 20 years ago, is due to play in the semi-final Saturday against China's Wang Hao.
