While the women's 20-kilometre walk got under way on schedule in terrible conditions, men's javelin qualifying was adjourned indefinitely because the slippery surface made competition too dangerous. Read more »

Taipei - Taiwan's main taekwondo Olympic hope Chu Mu-yen announced his retirement Wednesday after failing to win gold, Taiwanese media reports said.
Chu, 26, gold medalist at the Athens Olympics, lost 3-2 to the Dominican Republic's Yulis Gabriel Mercedes in the men's 58kg event. Chu later beat Thailand's Chutchawal Khawlaor to win bronze. Read more »

Beijing - China's Wu Jingyu took Olympic gold in the women's 49-kilogram taekwondo category Wednesday while Mexico's Guillermo Perez won the men's 58-kg event.
World champion Wu beat Thailand's Buttree Puedpong 2-1 in her final while Daynellis Montejo of Cuba and Venezuela's Dalia Contreras Rivero claimed the bronze medals on offer. Read more »

Beijing, Aug 20 : Wrestler Sushil Kumar on Wednesday brought further international glory to India by winning the bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics after 56 years.
He won the medal in the men''s 66 kilograms freestyle category, defeating Leonid Speiridonov of Kazakhistan.
Khashaba Jadhav of Karad, Maharashtra, was the last Indian wrestler to win an individual bronze in the Helsinki Olympics in 1952. Read more »

Beijing - Spain eased past Croatia in the quarter-finals of the Olympic basketball tournament on Wednesday.
The 72-59 victory means they will play either hosts China or Lithuania in Friday's semi-final match.
The world champions took the first quarter 22-11 and led 37-26 at half-time. Looking in much better form than in any of their group games they increased that lead to 51-38 at the third quarter before wrapping up a comfortable victory. Read more »
