India's challenge at Japan Open ends with Srikanth's loss

Tokyo [Japan], Sept.23 : Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth crashed out of the ongoing Japan Super Series after suffering a defeat in the quarter-finals of the men's singles event here on Friday.

Despite winning the opening game, the eight-seeded failed to capitalize and went on to suffer an 18-21, 21-14, 21-19 defeat in a thrilling last-eight contest that lasted about an hour.

With his exit, India's challenge in the tournament also folded.

Tokyo [Japan], Sept.22 : Ace Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth has emerged as the lone survivor at the ongoing Japan Super Series after beating fellow countrymen Ajay Jayaram in the men's singles event here on Thursday.

The eighth-seed advanced to the quarter-finals after Jayaram retired hurt while lagging 21-16 in the second round.

Srikanth will next face Marc Zwiebler of Germany for a place in the semi-finals.

Tokyo established the "Semi-Elite" category for superior athletes from outside of Japan to provide better participation opportunities for runners from outside of Japan in the 2016 event.

Around 37,000 runners ran through the streets of Metropolitan Tokyo.

With its blend of old and new, Tokyo provides a fantastic venue for one of the worlds greatest marathons.

Saina crashes out of Japan Open Superseries in second round

Tokyo, Sept. 10 - World number one shuttler Saina Nehwal crashed out of the Japan Open Superseries after suffering a straight set defeat against unseeded Japanese Minatsu Mitani in the second round at Tokyo on Thursday.

Nehwal, who was seeded second in the tournament, was beaten 21-13, 21-16 in a 40-minute contest against superior opponent Mitani.

Mitani also pulled off a big upset when she trounced India's PV Sindhu in the opening round on Wednesday.

The result means India's challenge in women's singles has come to an end.
