Hamburg - Belgium defender Vincent Kompany resumed training Wednesday with German Bundesliga club SV Hamburg, but made it clear he had returned from the Olympic Games against his will.

Hamburg - Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin had to fight hard for a 3-1 victory over fourth-division Eintracht Trier in the first round of the German Cup on Friday.
Marco Pantelic in the eighth minute, Fabian Lustenberger (60th) and Patrick Ebert (81) were on target for Berlin, with the home side levelling in the 26th minute through Kevin Lacroix. Read more »
Cologne breeze into second round of German Cup

Hamburg - Newly-promoted Bundesliga side Cologne reached the second round of the German Cup when they defeated lower league side Niederauerbach 5-1 on Thursday evening.
Goals from Lebanese midfielder Roda Antar in the 15th minute and new Portugal signing Petit seven minutes later put Cologne in charge at the regional fifth division outfit. Read more »
Jarolim takes captain's role at SV Hamburg

Dutch coach Martin Jol resisted the temptation of naming veteran goalkeeper Frank Rost as captain, saying it was important to have a field player as leader on the pitch.
Rost, who skippered the side in last weekend's Emirates Cup tournament in London, will be the "informal captain," Jol said. Read more »

Hamburg - Ana Ivanovic remained top of the WTA tennis rankings released Monday, but fellow Serb Jelena Janokovic will take over from next week.
Jankovic will become world number one for the first time on August 11, the WTA has confirmed. Read more »

Hamburg - Roger Federer continues to top the men's ATP tennis rankings issued Monday but Spain's Rafael Nadal will take over from next week.
Nadal will replace Switzerland's Federer as the world's number-one ranked tennis player next week following results at the Cincinnati Masters.
Federer has held the top ranking for an unprecedented four and a half years. Read more »
