
Washington - Aaron Peirsol set a new world record in the 200-metre backstroke at the US national swimming championships in Indianapolis, Indiana, on Saturday.
The Olympic silver medalist in the event beat a record held by fellow American Ryan Lochte set during the Beijing Olympics last year. Peirsol set the new record in 1:53.08 minutes.
Lochte took second on Saturday with a time of 1:54.21 and Tyler Clary was third at 1:54.53.
It was the second world record for Peirsol in Indianapolis after he set a time of 51.94 seconds in the 100m backstroke on Wednesday. (dpa)
