Midfielder Wilshere disciplined by UEFA over tweets about placing bets on Arsenal

Midfielder Wilshere disciplined by UEFA over tweets about placing bets on ArsenalLondon, July 10 : Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has been warned by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) for flouting severe player rules by appearing to boast on Twitter about betting on his team.

The Euro football chiefs have slapped the England midfielder with an official warning for implying he had placed a wager on a teammate in a Champions League match.

Wilshere, who missed Euro 2012 with an ankle injury, has been given a formal ticking-off for bringing the integrity of the game into doubt.

The young midfielder had said fellow Gunner Emmanuel Frimpong was "worth a cheeky £10" to open the scoring at odds of 150/1 in a clash with Greek side Olympiakos.

The England starlet was not involved in the match himself because of the same injury. But as a result of a seven-month investigation, soccer bosses reached a decision yesterday that he had broken its laws.

"The player has been warned for being in breach of the principles of integrity of matches and competitions. The disciplinary measure was a warning," The Sun quoted a UEFA spokesman, as saying.

Wilshere insisted he had been only joking, tweeting: "I didn't actually bet on the game. I know we're not allowed to! I was only messing just to be clear." (ANI)
