Kiwi farmers advocate ‘shearing’ to be Olympic sport

Kiwi farmers advocate ‘shearing’ to be Olympic sportWellington, Jan 17 : New Zealand’s Federated Farmer has expressed hope over recognizing shearing becoming a big Olympic sport. Jeannette Maxwell, Chairwoman, Federated Farmers Meat and Fiber believes shearing is a sport that deserved international recognition and has potential to become demonstration sport at the Commonwealth Games, or even, the Olympics. “I can testify to the physical effort shearing takes. People like Ivan Scott, Kerri-Jo Te Huia and our World Championships team are athletes who take it to another level,” said Maxwell. She also claimed that competitive shearers could snip up to 700 lambs within eight hours, which is equal to running two complete marathons back-to-back, stuff. co. nz reports. Earlier this month new world records were made in solo lamb shearing when Irishman Ivan Scott sheared 749 lambs in eight hours. New Zealander Kerri-Jo Te Huia sheared 507 lambs in the same time to claim the women''s world record. The idea first came out through Sports Shear Australia in 2008, but the Australian Sports Commission rejected it in 2009. The shearing World Championships will be held in Masterton in March. (ANI)
