Rome -
Italy and AS Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi's father-in-law has been murdered in what investigators suspect was a settling of scores in Rome's criminal underworld, Italian news reports said Thursday.
The badly decomposed corpse of a man, shot in the face and back, was identified Wednesday as belonging to the 48-year-old Massimo Pisnoli, father of De Rossi's wife, Tamara.
The body was found on Monday lying on a dirt road near Aprilia, a town some 30 kilometres south of Rome, but severe disfigurement rendered difficult the initial identification.
De Rossi, 25, a member of Italy's 2006 World Cup winning team, skipped the Roma squad's scheduled training session on "compassionate grounds" the Rome-based football club said in statement released late Wednesday.
Pisnoli, who lived in Rome's working-class Trullo district, was reported as missing by family members last week.
The man had previous brushings with the law in connection to robbery and theft and survived a past murder attempt, news reports said. (dpa)
